6 Reasons To Choose Custom Jewellery

by | Nov 25, 2020 | Custom Design, Engagement Rings, Jewellery

Jewellery is a universal form of adornment. Whether your taste is classically elegant, alternative or vintage, the customisation of jewellery allows us to communicate intention, significance and our personal aesthetic.

For the purposes of this blog, I refer to ‘custom’ as I would ‘bespoke’, which means the personalisation of jewellery made to a client’s specifications.

Why Choose Custom Jewellery

Custom Is Art

Custom design is a vehicle through which we communicate in all mediums. Through custom jewellery, we communicate our aesthetic, our intention our spirituality or, simply, our whimsicality. We express ourselves creatively through our jewellery. Our choice of stone and metal may be incorporated into a complex, ornate, simple, delicate or strong design. We may weave stories or historical references through our pieces… jewellery is a vehicle of expression.

Custom Is Unique

An original custom or bespoke piece of jewellery is a unique expression of who we are and what we value. Being part of the decision to bring your vision to life is quite extraordinary, in the world of fine jewellery.

Imagine creating your own custom engagement ring, from conceptualising the design, selecting the perfect gem to presenting a perfectly handmade piece of jewellery to the person of your dreams. A simply beautiful, one-of-a-kind representation of your relationship.

From alternative to classic, what constitutes the perfect piece is unique to each and every client… the options are endless. Anything is possible, so ‘forge’ a unique perspective via custom and celebrate originality.

Sentimental Value

Perhaps you have gemstones, diamonds and metals from inherited pieces, or those forgotten in a drawer or jewellery box. Milestones in one’s life are typically celebrated through jewellery purchases, but with time styles change, as do we. However, memories never fade, so why not reimagine them? Jewellery from loved ones, places and past accomplishments may all be given new life — distilled into reimagined treasures to be cherished by generations to come.

Regardless of the reason, custom jewellery is the ultimate expression of appreciation for what was, what is and for what will be!

Within Your Budget

The custom process is available to everyone; limited only by imagination and budget.

Once you have expressed interest in a custom jewellery commission, a consultation is a necessary step. At this time you will be able to discuss initial design ideas, expectations and how best to work within your budget to achieve your particular request.

At FRIDA, we are typically able to repurpose stones and metals from your old jewellery; however, this will be assessed on a project-by-project basis, as the incorporation of certain materials may not be suitable for the new commission. If this proves to be the case, material may be credited against your new build. Obviously, if we are able to reuse your materials this will be a benefit; thus, reflected in the price of your piece.

Whether you are deciding upon your first handmade piece or repurposing an old one, budget is an important consideration. Custom is an investment, but not necessarily expensive.

Options are infinite, when selecting a gemstone.

Just as we custom build your jewellery, a custom sourced gemstone that meets your criteria is of critical importance. From diamonds and sapphires to tourmalines and spinels in a myriad of colours, cuts and sizes, options are limitless. I only source fine/high grade gemstones, characterised by excellent cutting, beautiful colour and clarity.

When choosing a gemstone, consider the practicality and function of the finished piece. My advice is always to select the best possible quality over size, based on your budget.

Quality

The quality of materials and craftsmanship and expertise at every level of execution is what separates the custom process in jewellery making from mass-production.

Much of the jewellery found online is mass-produced, including many luxury brands. This means that each design is made in quantity; hundreds or thousands of a design, typically made off-shore to allow for high margins — albeit often, but not always, lower costs to you the consumer. There is place for every price point, but there is also a hidden ‘cost’…a discussion for another day!

Custom jewellery, on the other hand, is completely unique. Each piece is specifically or individually designed and handcrafted, and in our case, to the highest possible standard.

When you choose to have a custom piece of jewellery made for you your experience is personal. A relationship of trust, understanding and typically friendship is made.

Work With A Designer

Choose a designer to help execute your vision carefully. It is imperative that the designer you select is able to fully comprehend your specific request. This may sound obvious, but it is not always the case. A great designer/goldsmith will offer guidance, ideas and concepts; thus, enabling informed decisions throughout every aspect of your project.
